Shirley Alice Peterson passed away Saturday, March 30, 2018, in Pendleton, Oregon.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 5, at 2 p.m., at Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla, Wash., and a memorial service will be held April 21, 2 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Pendleton, Ore.

Shirley was born in Pendleton in 1921 to Mathias and Lydia (Taskinen) Deining, and was raised in the Greasewood area near Helix, Oregon. She attended school in Helix, and graduated from Griswold High school in 1939.

In 1941 she married Frederick Arnold Peterson, and they made their home on the family farm in Helix where they raised their two sons, John and Tom. Shirley and Arnold had been married 56 years at his passing, Sept. 12,1998.

Shirley was an active part of her community, being involved in the Greasewood Finnish Heritage Society, JC Club, TAT, and was a member of Eastern Star. She was a member of First Christian Church, and Christian Women’s Fellowship.

She enjoyed gardening, baking, and most of all traveling to watch the grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their various dance and sporting activities.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, and sisters Violet Wolpert, Thelma Herrala, Marie Elizabeth “Betty” Parent and Lorna Catherine Deining.

She is survived by her sons John Deining Peterson (Linda) and Thomas Arnold Peterson (Jackie); two sisters, Laurel Phillips and Elaine Altmanns; three granddaughters, Jennifer Ericson (Scott), Jill Crook (Jaymi) and Suzette Morales (Matt); and three great-grandchildren, Kelley and Reese Ericson, and Adrian Morales.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Helix Booster Club, the Greasewood Finnish Heritage Society, or Umatilla County Historical Society.

I became acquainted with Shirley mostly through the TAT club. Very nice lady. She lived not far from me, so we very often went together.
