Barbara "Karen" McAnally Obituary

Barbara “Karen” McAnally was born on September 20, 1941 in Vancouver, Washington to Robert Harley and Beverly Mae (Guye) Rothrock.  She passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024 at McKay Creek Estates in Pendleton with her son and daughter at her side.
Karen was raised on the family ranch in Adams, Oregon and attended school in Pendleton, Oregon.  She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1959.  She then attended Eastern Oregon College and graduated in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in education.
Karen married Gary Dean Hereford on July, 11, 1965 and had a son, Brent, and a daughter, Kristan.  The couple later divorced.
In 1986, Karen’s daughter Kristan and Jim’s son Andy set them up for a first date. After a long courtship, Karen married James “Jim” Paul McAnally on February 14, 1998.  This added three step-sons to the family: Greg (Julie) McAnally, Paul (Kathy) McAnally and Andy (Kellye) McAnally.
Karen spent her career teaching elementary education in Pendleton where she was much beloved.  She taught at Washington, West Hills and Lincoln elementary schools throughout her career. Everyone who taught with her, or were taught by her, knew her giving heart and genuine kindness.  She retired from teaching in 2000.
Karen was a very active member of PEO Chapter BJ since 1979 and served as an officer during her membership.  She was also active in Kill Kare for many years.  She was a fixture at her grandchildren’s sporting events, supporting both Buckaroos and Bulldogs! She loved the Pendleton Round-up and attended every performance for as long as her health allowed.
She loved to travel.  She visited Italy, New York City, Washington DC and took multiple trips to Mexico.  She and Jim took many road trips together and loved to visit their favorite destination in Cozumel, Mexico.
Karen is survived by her son, Brent (Julie) Hereford, daughter Kristan (Kelsy) Garton, and five grandchildren: Jessica Kooch, Aspen Garton, Regan Hereford, Sauren Garton and Peyton Hereford.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents, her aunt Barbara (Guye) Hodgen, and brother Harley “Kent” Rothrock.
The family would like to thank the staff of McKay Creek Estates for the loving care provided to Karen in her final years of life.  They would also like to thank the staff of Vange John Memorial Hospice for their compassionate support in Karen’s final months.
A celebration of life will be held on January 26, 2024 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 1:00 PM followed by a reception at Hamley’s Slickfork Saloon.
