Carol Jean Cross, a lifelong Oregonian known for her warmth, humor, and deep love for family, passed away on March 13, 2026, at the age of 86. Carol was born on Christmas Day in 1939 in Pendleton, Oregon, to Truman Cross and Mildred Cross (Hicinbothem). She was raised in Coombs Canyon on the Cross family ranch, where she developed a lifelong love of animals and the outdoors.
She graduated from Pendleton High School in 1958 and that same year married Richard Ayers, with whom she had three children: Ricky Cletus Ayers of Pendleton, Ryan Cyle Ayers of Hermiston, and Carrie Lee Ayers Simrell of Pendleton, wife of Kelly Simrell. Carol and Richard raised their family in Pendleton, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and strong family values. She was later blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply.
In 2001, Carol married Elwayne Bergstrom, who she lovingly described as the love of her life. Their years together were filled with companionship and joy. Carol worked as a meter technician for the Pendleton Police Department and also served the State of Oregon. Above all, she took great pride in being a homemaker, always finding ways to reinvent herself and care for those around her. She had a deep appreciation for tradition and community, especially enjoying the Pendleton Round-Up. She loved hosting birthday parties, spending time with her grandchildren during school breaks, and surrounding herself with family whenever possible. A devoted animal lover, Carol raised and showed horses and cared for many animals throughout her life. She is survived by her beloved goldendoodle, Miss Penny Rem. Carol also found simple joy in her favorite television show, Walker, Texas Ranger, and was known to clear the room when it came on. She had a wonderfully trusting spirit and a playful sense of humor. Often the good-natured target of jokes and pranks, she met every moment with a smile, laughter, and unwavering
kindness—qualities that made her truly special.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Loeta Mikel, Truman Cross Jr., Melvin Cross, Lillian Hoeft, and Patricia Michael; her first husband, Richard Ayers; and her beloved husband, Elwayne Bergstrom.
Carol moved through life with grace and love, touching the hearts of everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
