Carol Shroyer Obituary

Carol Evalee Campbell Shroyer was born to Cassie (McAlavy) Campbell and Henry Campbell on August 29th, 1931. She passed away peacefully at age 90 on April 11th, 2022, after a battle with pneumonia.

Carol attended Helix Elementary and Griswold High School in Helix, where she met her future husband, Glenn Shroyer, at a school dance. After she attended Linfield College for 2 years, they married in 1951 and returned to Helix where he worked for two local farmers and she cooked for the farm hands.

Carol was a member of the Juniper Canyon Club, Helix Women’s Club, Helix Baptist Church Ladies Aide and Missionary groups. Over the years she also taught Sunday School, was Sunday School Superintendent and church organist. A fan of school sports, she could be depended upon to attend all games her kids participated in – Gene, born in 1952, and Susan, born in 1954. She enjoyed playing badminton, croquet, Rummy, and BINGO herself.

Glenn and Carol moved to her grandparents’ homestead near Myrick in 1971. Carol prided herself in being a farm wife who could assist in moving machinery when needed. After the kids left home she worked for several years at Graham Wells Drug in Pendleton, and took a Nurses’ Aide class to see what drew Susie into the field.

Spending time with her grandchildren was a favorite—making pancakes, playing cards, riding bikes, climbing the hill behind the house, playing in the creek and teaching them to drive.

Glenn and Carol were both active in VFW and the Two-Cylinder Club, and enjoyed many trips across the country with the Pendleton Travel Club, as well as driving to visit Glenn’s family in Nebraska, Susie’s family in Phoenix, Gene in Salem and Bend, siblings in California. They were also awarded  CITIZENS OF THE YEAR  by the Helix Chamber of Commerce.

When they moved into Sunridge Retirement in Pendleton in 2014, Carol said, “I didn’t know I didn’t like to cook, until I didn’t have to!” They both enjoyed the meals there as well as the activities and socialization. She was active in KOPS, attended Pendleton Christian Church and loved to dress up in hats for special holiday celebrations. She enjoyed crocheting hats, slippers, and lap robes in varied colors.

Music was always a big part of her life. She learned to play on her grandmother’s piano, and had acquired a chord organ, 2 keyboards, 3 accordions, a ukulele, and numerous harmonicas which she would play both for others’ and for her own enjoyment.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, her sister MaryLee Starkel, her son Gene, and her grandson Matthew Metzer. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Susie and “favorite son-in-law” Tim Metzer; 3 grandchildren, Gretchen (Chris) Hancock, Todd Shroyer, Kelly (Michael) Waldo; 7 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.

All who remember Carol are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 11th at 10:00 AM at the Helix Church.
