Richard "Dick" Goodwin Obituary

Richard “Dick” Clarence Goodwin passed away peacefully Friday, May 30th, 2025, with his wife Marlene at his side.

Dick was born in Wausau, Wisconsin to Lloyd and Ruth (Trotzer) Goodwin on September 1,1937. When Dick was 5 years old he and his family moved to Shelton, Washington. He attended school in Shelton, graduating in 1955. In 1959, he graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor's degree in Education. While at PLU, he met his future wife, Marlene Lorenzen. Dick was on the PLU football team; his position was tackle. He was Evergreen All-Conference,Little All-Northwest, and Honorable Mention Little All-American. Dick’s fine offensive blocking, along with his quick, vicious tackling earned him the honor of the league’s top lineman.

Dick and Marlene were married on June 21, 1959, at Peace Lutheran Church in Pendleton, Oregon. They would have been married 66 years this June. After they were married, Dick and Marlene lived in Olympia, Washington, where they both taught. In 1961, Dick and Marlene moved back to Pendleton when Marlene’s father, Gus Lorenzen’s, health deteriorated. Gus asked Dick if he would take over the farm. Dick continued to grow wheat until his retirement.

Dick enjoyed working with youth. He coached Little League Baseball and youth basketball. He also served on the Pendleton Grain Growers Board and St. Joseph Academy School Board, Church Council, and was Sunday School teacher at Peace Lutheran Church.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Suttle Care, along with Dr. Quakenbush and the nurses, for their wonderful care of Dick for the last few years. Dick appreciated everyone of
them.
