Stanley William "Bill" Carter, Jr., passed away surrounded by family in Pendleton on his 85th birthday, June 20, 2024. Bill was born in Camden, New Jersey to Joyce and Stanley Carter, Sr. and spent his early childhood in Camden and Delanco, NJ. He attended high school and college in Ames, Iowa, graduating from Iowa State University in 1962 with a degree in forestry.
He then began a long career with the United States Forest Service, which included assignments in Waldport, Reedsport, Dale, and Pendleton before culminating at the regional office in Portland. Bill spent over twenty summers on fire duty, eventually serving as a camp supervisor during fire season in the Northwest before retiring from the Forest Service in 1994.
Bill is survived by Bonita "Bonnie" Carter, with whom he shared nearly 62 years of marriage. Their four children were born in Oregon and now reside in Pendleton, Portland, and Seal Harbor, Maine. Bill's brother, John Carter, currently lives in Des Moines, Iowa.
Throughout his life Bill enjoyed working on model trains and frequently travelling with Bonnie by air, land, and sea. In recent years Bill delighted in his role as "Papa" for his five granddaughters. His family gathered for a private service at Olney Cemetery where he was interred in the Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Vange John Memorial Hospice at Good Shepherd Health Care System.
