Stephen Rice Obituary

Stephen John Rice passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones on February 27, 2026. Stephen was born in San Bernardino, California on July 12, 1946, he was the eldest son of John and Dorothy Rice.

Stephen traveled far and wide and landed in LaPine, Oregon where he lived with his family. He then lived with Jaime Szuba and her son Austin for about four years. Jaime then moved to Hermiston, Oregon and Stephen moved with her; she took Stephen on many fine adventures while he lived there. She was part of his chosen family. Stephen then moved to Pendleton, Oregon and moved in with Gene and Teresa Morris. Stephen was a faithful companion to Gene whom he called “Roy”. Stephen participated in the “Trendsitions Day Program” in Pendleton for several years, he loved attending and had lasting friendships with all who participated and all who worked with him. Everyone who met Stephen dearly loved his quiet gentle nature. Stephen was six feet tall and his heart was just as big.

Stephen loved watching the “Rifleman” and other cowboy shows with “Roy”. Stephen loved the Fourth of July, fireworks, and BBQs. Stephen especially loved his birthday; a large party was given in his honor each year hosting more than 50 people. A favorite past time for Stephen was sitting in the yard enjoying a breeze with his whirligigs. Stephen loved wearing boots with shorts, his fancy watches and being called “Bad, Bad, Stephen Rice”. He loved rainy days and deploying
his umbrellas in the yard. Stephen’s all-time favorite chore was taking out the garbage and watching the garbage truck pick it up, while mimicking the sound of the truck arm with loud “BANG”. Stephen had a biological family, but the family he chose consisted of many people that came into his life in the 24 years he lived with Jamie and then Gene and Teresa. He was a blessing to all who knew him. Stephen loved to sing, he loved music, and he and “Roy” would sing the oldies together. When he heard a country music song, he would tear up while smiling at the memory. Stephen especially loved to sing in church at times changing the words but would always stay in tune with the song. Stephen is now singing with his Savior Jesus for ETERNITY!

A funeral for Stephen will be held at Pendleton Church of God on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 10:00 am.
